Hundreds people died as the Rana Plaza building in Savar which is located 30 km away from Dhaka in Bangladesh collapsed at 9am in the morning on Wednesday, 24 April 2013. About 2600 people are reported to have been in the eight-floor building when the tragedy occured. The building was used by textile companies as well as a shopping center. There are reports that workers claim that they were forced to work despite a crack which occured the day before the tragedy and despite the instruction by the local police to keep the company closed. Two of the factories in the building have been audited against the BSCI Code of Conduct.
The textile area at the Biofach in Nürnberg, Germany, which was offered since 2009, will no longer be continued from 2013 onwards. The organizers mention as reason therefore that the textile area could not be established as expected – regarding the number of exhibitors as well as the number of textil-specific customers. Furthermore they referred to the other similar events in Germany as well as the intent for conceptual clarity. Textile area, textile forum and the fashion shows will no longer be part of the Biofach. Single exhibitors will continue to exhibit in the natural commodities area.
At least 115 workers died in a fire in the textile factory called Tazreen Fashion in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 24 November 2012. The factory was audited by the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) in December 2011.
